The PPOA Star & Shield is the official publication of the union that represents Sergeants, Custody Assistants and DA Investigators. It comes out monthly and features news articles and opinion pieces. The April and October 2008 issues of the Star & Shield contained articles commenting about off duty drunk driving arrests. Because OIR recognizes that the union does and should have an important voice in the direction of the Department, it takes the Star & Shield seriously. For the same reason, OIR feels obligated to respond when statements based on inaccurate data appear within the paper that relate to issues important to OIR's work.
OIR submitted the following article for publication in the Star & Shield. It was not accepted, but OIR hopes that its availability below will provide additional balance and clarity to this important topic.
